About this session

Grafana has long been an essential tool in the observability of critical systems in Arthur Kepler’s work as a site reliability engineer. When he was suddenly handed the legacy of a family member’s research orchard — remote, off-grid, and in need of care — the principles and tools of site reliability engineering enabled him to rapidly develop a resilient, remotely managed system to ensure the orchard’s survival and success.

In this talk, Arthur will explore the design and implementation of an IoT-powered monitoring system featuring solar power, remote networking, MQTT, InfluxDB, and Grafana. It examines how reliability engineering principles apply in extreme environments — where every watt counts, connectivity is unpredictable, and failure isn’t an option.
