In years past, Planet faced the common challenge of managing logs and metrics with disparate tools like Splunk, SignalFx, and Stackdriver, while also juggling a massive Kubernetes footprint, all hosted across a hybrid cloud and on-premises environment. Join Staff Software Engineer Jacob Straszynski as he walks through Planet’s path to Grafana Cloud and a centralized, fully managed observability stack built on Mimir for metrics, Tempo for traces, and Loki for logs. You will also hear about the team’s future plans for adopting Pyroscope for profiles and Grafana Cloud solutions for IRM and performance testing.

Jacob is a Staff Engineer at Planet Labs with a passion for toolsmithing that eventually drove him into the worlds of Kubernetes and Observability. Jacob has been trying to make computers do fun things for him since he worked on a Half-Life 1 mod in 1998. Outside of tech, Jacob makes a mean Neapolitan pizza and sourdough batard, climbs mountains in the Sierra Nevada mountains, and wingfoils on Lake Tahoe.
