Performance:

• Coalesce duplicate panel queries: dashboards with many panels (or multiple users loading the same dashboard concurrently) previously fired one upstream Kentik API call per panel per user, which could hit Kentik API rate limits and cause timeouts on panel-heavy dashboards. Identical concurrent/ near-concurrent queries now share a single upstream call (30s window, well under typical 1-minute query granularity).

Security / dependency fixes:

• Removed a KENTIK_DISABLE_QUERY_DEDUP environment-variable escape hatch, which violates Grafana's plugin policy against reading environment variables (flagged by Grafana's plugin review).
• Resolve high-severity CVEs flagged by the Grafana plugin validator's osv-scanner: google.golang.org/grpc (CVE-2026-84445, CVE-2026-84304), browserslist (CVE-2026-73088, CVE-2026-73089).
• Upgrade Go toolchain to 1.27.0, resolving 8 govulncheck findings (GO-2026-5026, GO-2026-5942, GO-2026-5972, GO-2026-6088, GO-2026-6089, GO-2026-6090, GO-2026-6091, GO-2026-6218).
• Resolve high-severity npm CVEs: fast-uri (CVE-2026-18446), js-yaml, nanoid (CVE-2026-67213).
• Corrected changelog metadata (removed erroneous "unreleased" tag from 3.0.0).
• Added npm audit and govulncheck to CI and pre-push hook.

Plugin submission hardening:

• Use crypto/rand (not math/rand) for retry-backoff jitter and request-id generation, resolving gosec G404 (weak random number generator).
• Grafana Go SDK (grafana-plugin-sdk-go) pinned to v0.294.0.
• Release artifacts carry build-provenance attestation (actions/attest-build-provenance).

Features:

• Converted the plugin to a backend datasource (Go). Query execution, result parsing, credential handling, and the dictionary cache now run server-side, enabling Grafana Alerting, recorded queries, and shared dashboards.
• Added a Go backend under pkg/ (QueryData, CheckHealth, CallResource) built with Mage; plugin.json now sets backend, alerting, and executable.
• Rebuilt all bundled dashboards for the UDE query model:
  • Kentik: Overview — feature-highlight panel, traffic by site/app/IP.

• Dashboard template variables can drive measurement, metrics, dimensions, rollups, and filter values. New values(<measurement>, <dimension>) function for live distinct-value variables (e.g. device picker).
• Every series carries an "Open in Kentik" data link (region-derived). To do, populate with a link for the Kentik Data Explorer with the same query parameters (currently links to the base Explorer URL; requires API team to provide a URL-builder endpoint or document the query-hash format).
• Series carry dimension values as field labels for map lookups and transforms.
• Backend supports format: "table" (instant aggregation) and format: "nodegraph" (nodes + edges for the Node Graph panel).
• Concurrent query execution (up to 10 parallel targets per request).
• Retry with exponential backoff on HTTP 429/502 (honors Retry-After).
• Namespace-aware error messages: cross-namespace metric×dimension 500s now identify the conflict and suggest the universal equivalent.
• User-Agent: kentik-grafana-plugin/<version> sent on all API calls.
• Custom MeasurementSelector with collapsible family sections, search, and full keyboard navigation.
• DimensionsPicker warns on cross-namespace conflicts (⚠️ badge).

Backward compatibility:

• Legacy v2 query shim: old saved panels (dimension/metric/mode format) are automatically translated to UDE queries and executed. A deprecation notice prompts users to re-save in the new format. The shim will be removed in a future version.

Changes:

• Removed the frontend proxy routes (site, dictionary, query) from plugin.json; the backend calls Kentik's APIs directly with the configured credentials. The frontend obtains dictionary metadata via the backend dictionary resource.
• DataSource now extends DataSourceWithBackend; query()/testDatasource() route to the backend. Ad-hoc variables remain dictionary-driven.
• Minimum supported Grafana version: 11.6.0 (tested against 11.6, 12.4, 13.0).
• Requires Go and Mage for backend compilation (npm run build:backend).

Known limitations / planned follow-ups:

• [ ] Remove the legacy v2 query shim after one release cycle (once users have migrated their panels to the new UDE format).
• [ ] Deep-link to Kentik Data Explorer with full query state (currently links to the base Explorer URL; requires API team to provide a URL-builder endpoint or document the query-hash format).
• [ ] EVENTS family support (/events, SNMP Traps, Syslog) — these measurements are not served by the Query/execute API despite appearing in the dictionary; needs a different API path from the Kentik backend team.
• [ ] Auto-populate the UDE editor when editing a legacy-shimmed panel (currently shows blank fields; user must reconfigure manually).
• [ ] E2E Playwright tests covering real backend query execution.

Both plugins can run side-by-side; existing kentik-connect-app v1.7.0 dashboards remain functional while you migrate at your own pace. See v2.0.0 release notes for migration steps.
