Grafana crosses 1 million mark for active instances

Grafana crosses 1 million mark for active instances

November 23, 2022 2 min

It’s hard to think of a use case that Grafana hasn’t been used for.

When Torkel Ödegaard launched the Grafana open source project with his first commit in December 2013, “my goal was to make time series data accessible for a wider audience, to make it easier to build dashboards, and to make graphs and dashboards more interactive,” he said.

Almost nine years and many commits later, Grafana is now celebrating just how big its community has become: There are currently more than 1 million active Grafana instances in the wild!

“People normally use Grafana for things like monitoring their IT infrastructure, their servers, their containers, their Kubernetes workloads. But Grafana goes so much beyond IT operations management,” Grafana Labs CEO and Co-founder Raj Dutt said during the keynote of GrafanaCONline 2022. “We are always inspired by the use cases we see, all the interesting problems that people use Grafana to solve, and all the interesting data that [the community] visualizes from a variety of different databases.”

Our mission is to continue developing Grafana in ways that meet the needs — and curiosities — of our broad user base, which ranges from individual contributors to international conglomerates. With this year’s Grafana 9 release, we focused on improving Grafana’s user experience and making observability and data visualization easier and more accessible for everyone. And with each subsequent release, we have improved functionality so you can create and share all your incredible Grafana dashboards with the greater open source community.

But we wouldn’t be here without all of you. We are grateful for our entire Grafana community, so to all of our users, contributors, and customers, we simply want to say: Thanks a million!
