How to get an organization to adopt a central telemetry solution

Wednesday, May 27, 2020 13:30 ET / 17:30 UTC | 30 min

Description

One of the main objections to adopting a centralized telemetry offering that we hear is that “I need this obscure feature from insert your favorite vendor.” So, how did we drive broad adoption of a centralized telemetry solution built in-house using open source software? For a large organization, it’s not just a technical challenge, but also an organizational one. In this talk, I will present the approach we took to convince the 6,000+ engineers at Bloomberg to adopt a new and growing platform. I will discuss some of our key decisions and trade-offs, as well as share the lessons we learned during our four-year journey.

Stig Sorensen, Manager. Production Visibility, Bloomberg LP

Stig is a Bloomberg veteran who started his career as a financial software developer building trading systems in the early 2000s. Looking back, that initial team would today be called an SRE team, so he can confidently say that he started in the observability space early in his career. After 12 years of building software and software teams in Bloomberg’s Trading Systems department, Stig moved to manage a new Production Visibility group responsible for telemetry and inventory management tools. So he’s gone full-circle in his role and is now providing the tools he wished he had access to early in his career.
