Slide 2 of 5

Your progress

You’ve reached Level 1: Infrastructure visibility

Cloud provider observability is set up. You can now answer: “Is my cloud infrastructure healthy?”

  • Cloud metrics visible in Grafana
  • AWS, Azure, or GCP resources monitored
  • Foundation for alerting and dashboards

Hierarchy of Observability Needs

Expand your Level 1 foundation:

  • Add more cloud accounts: Multi-account, multi-region visibility
  • Explore integrations: Pre-built dashboards and alerts for common systems
  • Complete the foundation: Infrastructure visibility across your stack

Let’s step back and see where you are in your observability journey. Remember the hierarchy of observability needs we talked about at the start? Level 1 is infrastructure visibility. Level 2 is service visibility. Level 3 is transaction insights. Level 4 is custom instrumentation.

By setting up cloud provider observability, you’ve built a strong foundation for Level 1. Whether you chose to store data in Grafana Cloud or connect directly to your cloud provider’s APIs, you can now answer “Is my cloud infrastructure healthy?” with confidence. You have visibility into your AWS, Azure, or GCP resources.

Now, cloud metrics are just one piece of the puzzle. Most environments also need monitoring for servers, databases, and other infrastructure. The goal is infrastructure visibility across your entire stack before moving up to Level 2.

Here are some courses that can help you round out Level 1.
