Prerequisites

To complete this course, you’ll need:

  • Grafana Cloud or self-managed Grafana (v11.6+) (sign up for Cloud free)
  • Access to Drilldown apps in your Grafana instance
  • At least one infrastructure telemetry signal accessible in Grafana (metrics or logs)

Data access options

Your telemetry data can be accessible via data sources or stored in Grafana Cloud’s built-in databases:

Data typeAccess via data sourceOr store in Cloud
MetricsPrometheus data sourceGrafana Cloud Metrics
LogsLoki data sourceGrafana Cloud Logs

What you’ll use

During the hands-on learning paths, you’ll work with the Drilldown apps in Grafana. Access them from the Grafana main menu by selecting Drilldown, then choosing the specific app (Metrics or Logs). They work with your existing data automatically.

No query language knowledge required

This course is designed for visual exploration. You don’t need to know PromQL or LogQL.

Script

Let’s talk about what you’ll need for this course.

First, you need access to Grafana: either a Grafana Cloud account (sign up for free at grafana.com) or a self-managed Grafana instance running version 11.6 or later.

Second, you’ll need telemetry data accessible in Grafana. For Grafana Metrics Drilldown, you need metrics accessible via a Prometheus data source or stored in Grafana Cloud Metrics. For Grafana Logs Drilldown, you need logs accessible via a Loki data source or stored in Grafana Cloud Logs.

This course explains what the Drilldown apps are and when to use them. For hands-on practice, each module includes a link to a learning path where you’ll work with your actual data. Having real metrics and logs makes that practice more valuable.

If you don’t have data flowing yet, that’s okay. You can explore the Drilldown apps using Grafana Play (no setup required), or check out the related courses on the previous slide to get data into Grafana. Then come back to practice with your own data.
