Select a folder and add labels

In this milestone, you organize your alert rule by selecting a folder and add labels to categorize and route your alerts effectively.

Labels are unique identifiers of an alert instance. You can use them for searching, silencing, and routing notifications.

Examples of labels are server=server1 or team=backend. Each alert rule can have more than one label and the complete set of labels for an alert rule is called its label set. It is this label set that identifies the alert.

Labels appear in alert notifications, helping responders understand the context and take appropriate action quickly.

To select a folder and add labels, complete the following steps:

  1. In the Folder section, select a location for your alert rule.

For example, select Infrastructure alerts to group alerts related to system performance.

  2. In the Labels section, click Add label to create a label to categorize and route your alert.

    For example:

    • Add a label with key severity and value critical for high-impact alerts.
    • Add a label with key team and value backend to route to the responsible team.
    • Add a label with key service and value webapp to identify the affected service.

In the next milestone, you learn how to set alert evaluation criteria.
