Add Traces panel to dashboard

Traces visualizations let you follow a request as it traverses the services in your infrastructure. The traces visualization displays traces data in a diagram that allows you to easily interpret it. Traces visualizations currently render one trace traversal based on the traceID used in TraceQL or using a variable.

To add a Traces panel to a dashboard, complete the following steps:

1. While viewing a dashboard in edit mode, locate the edit pane on the right side of the screen.

2. Under Add, click Panel or drag it onto the dashboard canvas.

   A new panel is added to your dashboard.

3. On the new panel, click Configure.

4. In the Queries tab, select the same traces data source you selected for the traces table.

5. From the visualization picker on the right, select Traces.

6. In the query editor, click the TraceQL query type tab.

7. Enter ${traceId} in the TraceQL query field to create a dashboard variable.

   This variable is used as the template query.

8. Under the Panel options, enter a Title for your trace panel.

9. Save the changes to the dashboard.

10. Click Back to dashboard.

In the next milestone, you’ll arrange the order of the panels in the dashboard and test it.
