Capture best practices
Create a best practices rule when you want Grafana Assistant to reinforce organizational standards such as Rate, Errors, Duration (RED) guidelines, service level indicator/service level objective (SLI/SLO) workflows, or dashboard conventions. The rule keeps advice consistent across teams and onboarding cycles.
Before you begin
- Access the settings page: Open Grafana Assistant > Settings > Assistant behavior.
- Policy sources: Collect the runbooks or internal guidelines you want the Assistant to reference.
- Scope decision: Choose whether the guidance should remain personal or apply tenant-wide.
Open the best practices template
- In Assistant behavior, expand Customize your Assistant experience through behavioral rules.
- Click Create rule, or select Add and edit this rule on the card labeled Best Practices.
Define the standards
Give the rule a memorable name, for example,
Best Practices
.Add the core standards to the rule body:
Use the RED method (Rate, Errors, Duration) wherever possible. Always recommend setting up SLIs (service level indicators) before creating SLOs (service level objectives). Suggest using template variables for dynamic dashboards.
Include links or references to internal resources if you expect the Assistant to mention them.
Set scope and enablement
- Select Just me or Everybody based on who should receive the guidance.
- Keep the rule enabled so the Assistant reinforces the standards in conversations.
Save and confirm
- Choose Create rule (or Save changes for template edits).
- Start a new chat, ask for dashboard or incident recommendations, and ensure the Assistant mentions the standards you defined.
- Iterate on the rule body if the response needs more specifics.
Reinforce best practices in conversations
Your observability best practices now appear automatically in Assistant conversations, helping teams follow established processes without memorizing internal playbooks.
