Silences in Grafana IRM now last as long as you set them
When you silence an alert group in Grafana IRM, the silence now lasts for the full duration you choose, even if the source resolves and fires again.
Previously, if the source sent a resolve signal while an alert group was silenced, the alert group resolved immediately and the silence ended with it. If the alert was flapping, the next firing alert started escalation again, so a three-hour silence could end after a few seconds.
While an alert group is silenced, IRM records firing and resolve signals from the source but doesn’t act on them. When the silence ends, whether it expires or you unsilence the alert group, IRM applies the last signal it received:
- If the source last reported the alert as resolved, the alert group resolves and IRM doesn’t page anyone.
- Otherwise, the escalation chain restarts, as before.
If you silence an alert group with no end time, it stays silenced until someone unsilences it. Attached alert groups stay silenced along with their root alert group. When the silence ends, each attached alert group applies its own last signal.
This behavior applies to all integrations that resolve alerts from the source. You don’t need to change any configuration.
