Simplified plugin management with automatic updates in Grafana Cloud

Grafana Cloud users are regularly updated with the latest, most secure version of Grafana. However, plugin lifecycle management has been a responsibility for server administrators. Plugins becoming outdated risks incompatibility with the running Grafana version and causing instability. They may have security vulnerabilities, or simply lack the latest features to help users be successful.

Managed Plugins automatically updates plugin versions for Grafana Cloud users, helping you receive important security patches, bug fixes, and new features without manually managing plugin upgrades.

When we first introduced Managed Plugins, it covered a growing set of Grafana Labs’ data source plugins. We’re now gradually rolling it out across Grafana Cloud and expanding coverage to all plugins installed from the Grafana plugin catalog, including Grafana Labs, partner, and community plugins.

After you install a plugin, Grafana Cloud will ensure it’s automatically updated. Plugins built by Grafana Labs are generally kept on the latest available version, even when that includes a major version bump. For partner and community plugins, automatic updates apply within the same major version: major version updates, as they include breaking changes which might require action, still need to be manually performed.

No action is required. When Managed Plugins is enabled for your stack, eligible plugins display “Managed by Grafana” in the Grafana Cloud portal and the plugin catalog.
