Send metrics to Grafana Cloud using Prometheus remote write
Welcome to the Grafana learning path that shows you how to send Prometheus metrics to Grafana Cloud.
Prometheus is an open source monitoring and alerting toolkit. It scrapes metrics from the jobs you configure, stores the samples as time series with key-value labels, and runs rules over that data to record new series or generate alerts.
Prometheus remote_write forwards the samples Prometheus has scraped to a remote storage endpoint. Grafana Cloud Metrics receives samples this way. It doesn’t accept the separate Prometheus push gateway protocol.
This path shows you how to add a remote_write block to your Prometheus configuration so that you can query, drill down, and visualize your metrics in Grafana Cloud.
Here’s what to expect
When you complete this path, you’ll be able to:
- Verify that your self-managed Prometheus server is running and serving metrics
- Configure Prometheus to send metrics to Grafana Cloud
- Verify that metrics appear in Metrics Drilldown
Before you begin
Before you send Prometheus metrics to Grafana Cloud, ensure that you have:
- Experience working with Prometheus and an understanding of its basic setup and operation.
- A running Prometheus server that’s already configured to scrape metrics.
- Access to the machine on which Prometheus is installed, with write permission for the Prometheus configuration file and permission to restart the Prometheus service.
- A Grafana Cloud stack in which you have the Admin role, so you can create the access policy token.
