# Add the Loki data source

Grafana provides built-in support for Loki. In this milestone, you navigate to Connections, search for Loki, and give your new data source a descriptive name.

To add the Loki data source, complete the following steps:

1. In the navigation menu, click **Connections > Data sources**.
2. Click **Add new data source**.
3. In the **Filter by name or type** field, enter `Loki`.
4. From the search results, click **Loki**.
5. At the top of the page, next to the data source name, click the edit (pencil) icon and enter a descriptive name for your Loki data source.

 For example, enter `Production Loki`.

**Did you know?** The name of the data source is displayed on dashboard panels and in the data source picker in Explore, so it’s important to choose a meaningful name.

In the next milestone, you configure the connection URL for your Loki backend.
