# Configure no-data and error handling

No-data and error handling controls what your rule does when a query returns no data or fails.

In this milestone, you open those settings and confirm the defaults.

1. In the **Set evaluation behavior** section, click **Configure no data and error handling** to expand the options.
2. Confirm **Alert state if no data or all values are null** is set to **No Data**. Don’t change it.
3. Confirm **Alert state if execution error or timeout** is set to **Error**. Don’t change it.

Your rule keeps the default handling for empty results and query errors. Next, you choose the contact point that receives the notification.
