What you’ll learn and do

You’ll build an alert rule that watches QuickPizza for HTTP 5xx server errors in the visual query builder. The journey walks through each section of the alert rule editor, one piece at a time.

Name and query	Name the rule, build a Prometheus query in Builder mode, and set a threshold
Folder and labels	Organize the rule and add labels
Evaluation behavior	Configure how often the rule runs and how it handles gaps
Notifications and save	Choose where notifications go, preview, and save the rule
Create an alert with code	Write the same kind of rule in Code mode, then add a silence

Welcome to Introduction to Grafana Alerting. This journey is for Grafana Cloud users who haven’t configured alerting yet. You’ll go through the process of creating an alert and getting notified, so you can learn how Grafana Alerting functions and understand the considerations and contingencies involved in the alerting process.

In the hands-on path, you build one alert rule on the QuickPizza demo app. QuickPizza is a demo pizza-ordering app that Grafana Cloud hosts for tutorial and learning purposes. It contains real HTTP traffic and real fluctuating metrics. The path installs it for you, so there’s no external setup required before you start.

In this journey, you’ll learn about the stages of alert rule creation and get hands-on practice as you go. By the end, you’ll understand how the elements of the alert rule creation process work in Grafana and you’ll be able to apply that to your own environment.

The whole journey takes about 45 to 55 minutes if you complete the practice steps along the way.
