Manage labels and cost attribution for Synthetic Monitoring
Cost attribution labels let you break down your Synthetic Monitoring costs, so you can see how much each team, service, or environment spends in a granular level and allocate those costs across your organization.
Attribution is based on check executions. An administrator can create or assign attribution label keys in the Cost Management and Billing app, and then your team can assign a value to each label when creating or editing a check in the Labels step. Grafana Cloud then attributes the cost of each check’s executions to the combination of label values you set.
For example, if you configure the labels team and environment, Grafana Cloud reports check execution costs for each combination of values, such as team=checkout, environment=production.
If you leave a value blank, that check’s executions are reported as unattributed. When an administrator adds a new attribution label, it appears on all existing checks as unattributed until a user sets a value.
Note
Cost attribution labels are separate from custom labels. Custom labels are applied to your check metrics and logs, whereas cost attribution labels are used only to attribute check execution costs in the Cost Management and Billing app.
Before you begin
- To configure attribution labels in the Cost Management and Billing app, you need the
Cost attribution adminrole. - To set cost attribution values on a check, you need permission to edit checks in Synthetic Monitoring. For more information, refer to Manage users and teams for Synthetic Monitoring.
- You can configure up to two Synthetics attribution labels.
- Grafana Cloud only attributes the check executions that occur after you configure a label, and it doesn’t backfill historical executions.
- Checks that have pre-existing labels set don’t need to be updated after you create a cost attribution label with the same key.
Set cost attribution values on a check
You can set cost attribution values when you create or edit a check:
- Navigate to Testing & synthetics > Synthetics > Checks.
- Create a check, or select an existing check to edit it.
- Go to the Labels step.
- In the Cost attribution labels section, enter a value for each label.
- If you don’t see a Cost attribution labels section, you can also create a custom label with a key and a value, and then configure a cost attribution label with the same key afterwards.
- Complete the remaining steps, then click Save.
All future executions of the check are attributed to the values you set.
Note
If you already have custom labels that you want to use for cost attribution, you can create a cost attribution label with the same key as an existing label. After that, existing checks with that label key and values are already configured and don’t need to be updated.
You can also set the labels cost attribution values through the Synthetic Monitoring API or the Terraform provider.
Configure a Synthetics attribution label

View your attributed costs
After you set values on your checks, view your Synthetic Monitoring spend broken down by label value in the Attributions tab of the Cost Management and Billing app. To learn more, refer to Cost attributions.
