# Understand your Grafana Assistant invoice

Grafana Assistant charges are calculated for each Grafana Cloud organization and billing month. Charges are based on active AI users and token usage.

## Understand active AI users

An active AI user is a user who performs any of the following actions during the billing month:

- Sends a message to Assistant
- Uses an Assistant action, for example, **Explain in Assistant**
- Uses Assistant in Grafana, Workspace, Slack, Microsoft Teams, or the `gcx` CLI
- Connects through the Grafana Cloud MCP server
- Runs an Assistant Automation manually or has one run automatically

An active AI user is counted once per month across all stacks in the organization.

When Grafana Labs employees work on your stack on behalf of your organization, their Assistant activity doesn’t count toward active AI users or token usage.

## Understand user token usage

Each active AI user on a Free or Pro plan has 40 million included tokens for the billing month. Included tokens aren’t shared between users and unused tokens don’t carry over to the next billing month.

User token usage includes:

- Assistant use in Grafana, Workspace, Slack, Microsoft Teams, or the `gcx` CLI
- Assistant features invoked through the Grafana Cloud MCP server
- Assistant Automation runs. A manual run counts toward the token usage of the user who starts it. Scheduled and event-triggered runs count toward the creator’s token usage.

Connecting through the Grafana Cloud MCP server counts as active use, even if you don’t use any Grafana AI tokens. Querying Grafana data through the MCP server doesn’t use Grafana AI tokens. Invoking an Assistant feature that uses an AI model provided by Grafana does.

## Understand system-initiated token usage

Assistant API requests authenticated with a Grafana service account are system-initiated usage. They don’t count as an active AI user or receive the per-user token allowance.

Free and Pro plans include 25 million tokens for system-initiated usage per organization each billing month. This allowance is shared across all stacks in the organization. On a Pro plan, usage above the allowance is charged at $2 per 1 million tokens.

## Review how charges are applied

For a Pro plan:

- The Grafana Cloud Pro platform fee includes the first 3 active AI users in the organization. Each additional active AI user is charged at $20 for the billing month.
- Each active AI user has 40 million included tokens. Only a user’s usage above their own allowance is charged.
- The organization has 25 million included tokens for system-initiated usage. Only system-initiated usage above the shared organization allowance is charged.
- Additional user and system-initiated token usage is charged at $2 per 1 million tokens.

Unused tokens from one user don’t offset another user’s usage or system-initiated usage.

Contracted accounts may have different prices or included usage. Refer to your contract or contact your Grafana Labs account team for the terms that apply to your organization.

## Review charges on your invoice

Grafana Assistant charges appear on your invoice as two line items:

- **Assistant** covers active AI users above the number included with your plan.
- **AI Tokens** covers user and system-initiated token usage above the amounts included with your plan.

The Grafana Cloud Pro platform fee is a separate charge and includes the first 3 active AI users.

## View a usage summary

The **Cost Management and Billing** app shows estimated Grafana Assistant charges and usage for your organization:

1. In Grafana, go to **Assistant** > **Usage**.
2. Select **View cost & billing details**.
3. Select the billing month.

The **Assistant** > **Usage** page shows usage and limits for the current stack. Billing and included usage are calculated across all stacks in the organization. Under **Tokens**, select **Chat** to review billable token usage. The **All** view combines chat and investigation token usage.

## Find your invoice

You can view your invoice from your [Cloud Portal](/grafana-cloud/account-management/cloud-portal/).

To access your invoice:

1. Sign in to Grafana Cloud.
2. From the left navigation, select [**Billing** > **Invoices**](/profile/org/invoices).
3. Select an invoice to view.

The most recent invoice is listed first, and you can view and download it as a PDF or CSV file.
