Migrate from app.k6.io to Grafana Cloud k6

In June of 2021, Grafana Labs announced the acquisition of k6. Since then, the k6 team has taken steps to integrate with Grafana and Grafana Cloud, which includes the release of the Grafana Cloud k6 application, while maintaining the app.k6.io application.

Maintaining two separate applications is a big challenge, so the k6 team has been focusing on adding new features to Grafana Cloud k6, while preparing our infrastructure to enable our customers who still use the legacy app.k6.io application to migrate to Grafana Cloud k6.

For customers who are still using app.k6.io, you can now migrate all of your information to Grafana Cloud k6.

Note

The migration is optional and requires the app.k6.io account owner to manually trigger it. Migration will be available on January 30th, 2024.

Why is this happening?

As part of the Grafana Labs acquisition, the k6 team has worked to integrate k6 into the Grafana Cloud platform. The goal is to provide a better user experience, allowing you to explore and visualize your data from your k6 performance tests alongside data from other systems that are already integrated into your Grafana instances. That can help you analyze and resolve performance issues faster, and more easily collaborate with other teams.

The new Grafana Cloud k6 application has also allowed the k6 team to integrate with other parts of the Grafana platform, such as Grafana Cloud Traces.

Now that Grafana Cloud k6 application can continue to serve existing customers’ workflows, and provide additional value with new features and deeper integration into Grafana, we want to start the process of migrating organizations to this new k6 experience.

Who is eligible to migrate?

All organizations with an active subscription to app.k6.io who aren’t using SAML SSO or the Teams feature can start the migration process.

In the near future, organizations who are using SAML SSO or the Teams feature will also be able to migrate.

What is being migrated?

The migration process includes:

  • All of your test data currently in app.k6.io, including:
    • Projects
    • Tests
    • Test schedules
    • Test runs
  • All of your static IPs
  • All the users in your app.k6.io organization will receive an invitation to join the new Grafana Cloud k6 organization.
    • Users will have the same roles in the new organization.

Once the migration process is complete, you can still access your app.k6.io account and see your projects and tests. You won’t be able to do certain actions anymore in app.k6.io, such as:

  • Add users
  • Update organization settings
  • Create tests

Differences between app.k6.io and Grafana Cloud k6

Grafana Cloud k6 supports the same customers’ workflows as app.k6.io, but there are a few differences between the two applications, as well as new features that are only available in Grafana Cloud k6.

  • APM export has been deprecated - You can now leverage Grafana data source plugins as a more powerful way to combine data from your tests and systems under test.
  • Analysis tab - The analysis tab is still available in Grafana Cloud k6, but it has fewer customization options than its app.k6.io counterpart. With dashboards and visualization being a core feature of Grafana, you can now use the Grafana Explore feature to leverage the data from your k6 tests. We aim to make it easy to move from:
    • Test results
    • Compare and analyze a test with previous test runs
    • Build dashboards with Grafana Explore

New features in Grafana Cloud k6

  • Distributed tracing in Grafana Cloud k6 - Easily correlate traces with your test results.
  • Private load zones - Leverage our k8s operator as part of Grafana cloud k6 for testing internal services.
  • Quotas and limits - Take control of how your organization uses GCk6 with limits you can set on a per-project basis.
  • Browser testing - Run cloud-based browser tests on top of your existing k6 protocol tests to measure web performance metrics and find hard-to-catch issues on the protocol level.

Start the migration process

To start the migration process, the owner of your legacy k6 organization needs to:

  • Log in to app.k6.io.
  • Click on the banner at the top of the page.
  • Click on Start migration.

Once the migration is complete, you can access and manage your k6 Cloud data in Grafana Cloud k6.

Access your Grafana Cloud k6 account

Once the migration process is complete, all users who were part of your app.k6.io organization will receive an email. The email varies depending on if the user already has an account on grafana.com or not.

  • For users who do not have a Grafana account, they will receive an email with a link to set up their new account. Once they click on the link they can set up a new password, and then log in to their Grafana Cloud account. They can then access Grafana Cloud k6 by opening the left-hand menu, and clicking on Performance testing.
  • For users who already have a Grafana account, they will receive an email with a link to join the newly created Grafana Cloud k6 organization. Once they click on the link, they can sign in to their Grafana Cloud account to accept the invitation. They can then access Grafana Cloud k6 by opening the left-hand menu, and clicking on Performance testing.

Rename your Grafana Cloud organization and stack

A Grafana Cloud account contains organizations and stacks.

  • A stack represents a deployment of Grafana Cloud, which includes Grafana, Prometheus, Graphite, Loki, Tempo, k6 and more. You can have multiple stacks in an organization and organize them based on projects, teams, or environments, for example.

Organizations have the “lk6” prefix added to them when they’re created during the migration process.
