# Configure push notifications on iOS and Android

Add push notifications to your notification rules and review your device-specific guidance to configure Do Not Disturb and volume overrides.

The steps to manage notification settings may depend on your device. For further detail, review the following device-specific guidance:

- [iOS-specific guidance](#ios-specific-configuration)
- [Android-specific guidance](#android-specific-configuration)

> Tip
>
> Always send test notifications to confirm your settings are configured as expected. From the **Settings** tab, open **Push notifications**, then tap **Send test notification** under either **Default notifications** or **Important notifications**.

## Add push notifications to notification rules

To receive push notifications on the mobile app, add the appropriate push notification types to your user [notification rules](/docs/grafana-cloud/alerting-and-irm/irm/oncall/manage/notify/#configure-user-notification-rules):

- **Mobile push default**: Default notifications for all alerts. These notifications follow your **Default notifications** settings in the app.
- **Mobile push important**: Louder, more urgent notifications for critical alerts. These notifications use your **Important notifications** settings in the app.

You can manage your notification rules from the **Notification rules** option in the **Settings** tab of the app, or by navigating to your **User Profile** in Grafana Cloud.

## Configure push notification settings

Depending on your device, notification settings may be managed from the **Push notifications** screen in the app’s **Settings** tab or from your device’s system settings:

- **Override Do Not Disturb (DND)**: On iOS, enable **Override DND for important** in the app to ensure critical notifications are never missed. On Android, DND override is configured per channel from the system notification settings (see below).
- **Override system volume**: On Android, toggle **Override system volume** under **Important notifications** or **Default notifications** so notifications are heard even when your phone is set to low volume.
- **Enable info notifications**: Under **Info notifications**, toggle **Enable notifications** to receive less urgent reminders, such as upcoming shifts (within 15 minutes of the start time) and shift swap requests (up to one month notice).

### iOS-specific configuration

For iOS users, most notification settings, including sound and volume customizations, can be configured directly within the Grafana IRM app from the **Settings** tab.

To receive critical push notifications, you must enable **Critical Alerts** in your device settings. Open the **Settings** app on your iPhone, scroll down to **Notifications**, find and tap **Grafana IRM**, and enable the toggle for **Critical Alerts**.

### Android-specific configuration

On Android devices, each notification type is linked to a system-level **Notification channel**. You can customize notification settings — such as sound, vibration, and Do Not Disturb (DND) overrides — through the system settings on your device.

To adjust these settings, tap **Customize notifications** under **Important notifications** or **Default notifications** in the app’s **Push notifications** screen. This opens the Android system settings for that notification channel.

#### Recommended Android devices

**Google Pixel** or **Samsung Galaxy** devices are recommended for optimal notification delivery. These devices adhere closely to Google’s standard Android APIs, ensuring a more consistent notification experience.

Grafana aims to support notifications on as many devices as possible, however Android notification behavior can vary across devices due to customizations by different Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), such as Samsung, Xiaomi, and OnePlus. These customizations can affect how push notifications are delivered, making it challenging to support all Android devices consistently.

#### Troubleshoot Android notification settings

If you don’t receive notifications as expected, review the following notification settings to improve delivery:

Disable **Pause app activity if unused**: Android may pause apps that are not frequently used, potentially blocking notifications.

- To disable: Go to **Settings** > **Apps** > **Grafana IRM** > **Permissions**, and turn off **Pause app activity if unused**.

Enable **Unrestricted battery usage**: By default, Android’s “optimized” battery settings can limit background activity, which can affect notification delivery.

- To enable: Go to **Settings** > **Apps** > **Grafana IRM** > **Battery**, and select **Unrestricted**.

> Note
>
> These settings may appear differently depending on your device model and Android version.
