Declare an incident

You can declare an incident from any panel in Grafana Cloud, directly from Slack, or via the API. This flexibility allows you to save time and declare incidents from wherever you are without navigating away from relevant dashboards, alerts, or OnCall alert groups.

Depending on the integrations you have configured, various actions may be performed automatically after an incident is declared. Incident details such as title, start time, and labels can be updated at anytime.

Declare an incident from Grafana Incident

To declare an incident directly from the Grafana Incident UI, follow these steps:

  1. In the main menu of Grafana Cloud, click Alerts & IRM, then select Declare incident
  2. Provide a title, select a severity, and add labels as needed
  3. Click More options to select channel prefix and status
  4. Review your incident form and click Declare incident

Incident details such as title, start time, and labels can be updated at anytime.

You can declare an incident from a variety of locations in Grafana Cloud. To declare an incident from a panel in Grafana Cloud, click Settings -> Extensions -> Declare incident.

Declare an incident from OnCall alert groups

If you are paged for an alert group in Grafana OnCall and realize that an incident is needed while investigating the details, you can declare an incident directly from Grafana OnCall.

To declare an incident from OnCall, follow these steps:

  1. From Alerts & IRM -> OnCall -> Alert groups
  2. Open the relevant alert group in the Alert groups list view
  3. From the alert details page, click Declare incident
  4. Once you’re redirected to the Grafana Incident app, complete the incident form and click Declare incident

Declare an incident from firing alerts

Declaring an incident from a firing alert streamlines your alert-to-incident workflow.

To declare an incident from a firing alert, complete the following steps.

  1. Navigate to Alerts & IRM -> Alerting -> Alert rules
  2. From the Alert rules list view, click the firing alert that you need to declare an incident for
  3. Click Declare incident to be redirected to the incident creation form
  4. Complete the incident form and click Declare incident

Note: The incident summary field is pre-filled with the name of the alert rule, but you can edit it as required.

Once your incident is created, the alert rule is automatically linked to the incident.

Declare a drill incident

You can use drill incidents to test your integrations or to conduct practice runs with your team without impacting your incident metrics. To declare a drill incident, follow these steps:

  1. From Grafana Incident, click +
  2. Provide a brief title for your drill incident
  3. Choose values for the remaining incident fields, or you can leave the defaults
  4. Click + Start a drill, then open the newly created incident and explore the functionality of Grafana Incident
