Join Grafana Labs for the 10th Hacktoberfest!

As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Hacktoberfest, Grafana Labs invites you to join the open source extravaganza! Hacktoberfest is more than just a month of coding; it’s an opportunity to connect with the global open source community, improve your skills, and make a lasting impact on projects you’re passionate about. 

What is Hacktoberfest and why should you participate?

Hacktoberfest is an annual event that takes place every October, encouraging individuals to contribute to open source projects. It’s a chance to collaborate with experienced engineers and build your portfolio with real-world experience. You’ll connect with people who share your passion for technology, learn from their experiences, and even find mentors to guide you in your career.

Participating in Hacktoberfest allows you to give back to the open source community. The projects you contribute to are often essential tools used by developers worldwide such as Linux Kernel, Kubernetes, React, Node.js, or VS Code, to cite a few. Your contributions can help improve software that many people rely on daily.

Hacktoberfest was founded by DigitalOcean, and this year’s edition features coding events hosted by organizations across the globe. Grafana Labs regularly participates in the event by highlighting a list of Hacktoberfest-appropriate issues as an opportunity for community members to contribute to our OSS repos. The issues are reviewed in advance by Grafanistas to ensure they can be completed in the timeframe, considering the amount of collaboration and reviews necessary.

Who is Hacktoberfest for?

Hacktoberfest offers benefits for everyone, regardless of their level of experience in open source. For newcomers, it’s a welcoming environment to take your first steps in contributing to projects. How to participate?

It’s easy! Just follow these steps:

• Register on the Hacktoberfest website by Tuesday, Oct. 31
• Find one or more participating projects to contribute to
• Have at least one PR/MR accepted for a chance to have a tree planted in your name through Tree Nation
• Have at least four PRs/MRs accepted to receive a digital reward

OSS is at the heart of what we do at Grafana Labs. As such, we welcome contributions anytime and we are excited whenever we get to collaborate with our community. New contributors looking for a gentle introduction to our projects can search by the “good first issue” label, while more experienced contributors can explore “help wanted” issues.

To enable your contribution, we’ve been reviewing issues and adding the “hacktoberfest” label to appropriate issues which can be completed in the timeframe. We’ll also be dedicating time throughout October to review these PRs, and we can’t wait to see what you come up with.
