Dr. Kevin Field is a Professor of Nuclear Engineering at the University of Michigan, Director of the Michigan Ion Beam Laboratory, and Co-Founder and Vice President of Theia Scientific, LLC. His work architects end-to-end nuclear materials development platforms by creating accelerated radiation effects testing methods — including advanced ion irradiation — designing novel characterization techniques, and integrating these with scalable AI and computer vision systems that replace manual microscopy analysis with automated, high-throughput data pipelines. At Michigan, Field leads the development of accelerated radiation testing platforms and novel in situ characterization methods — including TEM-ion irradiation systems — and integrates them with GPU-accelerated analytics to generate structured, large-scale databases of nanometric radiation defects. The MiTEM facility — a uniquely instrumented in situ TEM-ion irradiation platform — enables automated experimentation, real-time defect classification, and reproducible data generation under extreme environments. In parallel, Theia Scientific translates these advances into deployable edge-to-server AI/ML platforms for automated microscopy and industrial nondestructive testing applications. Together, Michigan and Theia operate in concert — bridging research infrastructure and production-grade AI systems — with a singular vision: to shorten the nuclear technology development cycle and accelerate advanced fission and fusion energy systems onto the grid, enabling clean, sustainable power sooner.
